November 4, 1939 Alpha Kappa Gamma Has Tenth Convention The tenth annual convention of Alpha Kappa Gamma, honorary leadership sorority is being held at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S. C., this week-end. The convention began yesterday and lasts through this evening. Miss Grace Robinson, Ermine Waddill, and Georgie Hurt are delegates to the convention from the Olympian circle. The theme of the convention is “Leadership on the College Campus. Registration was begun yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock. The dele gates registered in the lobby of the Woman’s Building. A progressive dinner was given by the sororities at 6:30 o’clock. Din ner was served in courses in the sorority club rooms in Marion Sims college. At 8 o’clock a business meet ing was held in the second floor study in the same building. Reports of the circles were given at that time. Tliis morning a workshop is being held. There will be a panel discus sion on problems of leadership on the college campuses. 4 his will be followed by the election of officers for the coming year. After lunch all the delegates will attend the Carolina vs. Florida foot ball game at Melton Field. A formal banquet to be given this evening at 7:30 o’clock in the Crys tal room of the Jefferson Hotel will close the convention. 'Ihe guest speaker will be Dr. Josiah Morse. Special guests of the convention will be leaders from women’s col leges in South Carolina. The Queens-Chicora college dele gates are visiting in the home of Dr. and Mrs. F. Ray Riddle and Miss Frances Riddle. They will return to the college tomorrow. Anne Wiley of Charlotte was elect ed stunt chairman of the freshman class. Gallery chairman for the class stunt will be Ruth Kilgo of Char lotte. Chairman of the sophomore ch stunt is Harriette Scoggin of Con way, S. C. Jane Watt Montgomery of Reidsville is the chairman of the sophomore gallery performance. Elizabeth Brammer of Cliristians burg, Va., is the chairman of the junior stunt and Mary Payne of Charlotte is gallery chairman. Members of the senior class elected Henrietta Mclver of Gulf as their stunt chairman. Frances Stough of Cornelius is the gallery chairman Stunt night is held each year in November. It is sponsored by tbc Athletic Association of which Mar tha Stoner of Elberton, Ga., is the president. Miss Cordelia Henderson, instructor of physical education, is the adviser of the association. The class being judged as having presented the best stunt for fifteen minutes will receive custody of a sil ver loving cup for one year. The name of the class winning the cup and the year the class graduates will be engraved on the cup. The class of ’41, this year’s Junior class, won the cup last year. The class of '42 this year’s sophomore class, won second place. The judges for the stunts will be announced later. They will be chosen from out in town. Friday—9:30 Chapel Services Dr. Sigmund Spaeth, noted musi cian, lecturer, composer and musicol ogist appeared at Queens-Chicora col lege yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Dr. Spaeth, “tune detective,’’ came to the college under the auspices 6f the college Choral club of whicb Frances Riddle of Columbia is presi dent and Maujer Moseley of Char lotte is secretary-treasurer. Miss Grace Robinson is director of the club. The noted lecturer spoke on con temporary developments in American music and gave examples with tunes. He is a prominent member of the American Society of Composers, Au thors and Publishers. He is actively associated with other national move ments which foster native talent and effect its adequate recognition. Dr. Spaeth, who is from Pennsyl vania, is of musical parentage. He won his Ph.D. at Princeton with a thesis on “Milton’s Knowledge of Music.’’ Tickets were sold by members of the Choral club. The speaker was presented in the college auditorium Prices of tickets were twenty-five cents for students and fifty cents for adults. Alpha Iota Makes Plans Members of Alpha Iota, honorary business sorority, held their regular monthly business meeting ev'ening, November 1, at 7:30 o’clock. The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Stott, who substituted at Queens last year. The meeting was opened by Ileita Caldwell, president of the chapter. Slie introduced Mrs. H. C. Alexander who spoke on the subject, “What State Employer’s Bureau Expects Students to Know Before Employing Them.” Advisors for the club are Miss Mary Inglis and Miss Thelma Ed wards. Officers of the club are: President, Ileita Caldwell; vice-president and pledge instructor, Callie McElroy; secretary, Helen Cochrane; treasurer, Anne Fuller and chaplain, Marjorie Poole. Very interesting programs are given each meeting. The group en tertained all the one-year and four- year business students at the first meeting of the year. French Teachers Of State To Meet Here Blakelys And Dean Slaton Honor Guests Alumnae Associations Present Them To Public The General Alumnae Association and the Charlotte Branch of the Alumnae Association of Queens-Chi cora college honored Dr. and Mrs. Hunter Bryson Blakely and Miss Clara Barnett Slaton last evening at a reception. The reception was held in Burwell hall. Charlotte citizens, friends of the college, and alumnae were guests at the reception. This was the first time the guests of honor had been presented to the public as a whole. Mrs. Emmett Crook is president of the General Alumnae Association MisS'Sarah Locke Blythe is president of the Charlotte Branch of the asso elation. SC A Project Is Announced The S.C.A. project for this year, the renovation of the “Y” Hut, has been announced. Dr. Blakely, President of Queens, has agreed to repair and remodel the outside of the building at the expense of the college if the student body will do the same to the inside. The windows are to be fixed so that Jiey will open and shut more easily, and the front porch will be re-ar ranged in a more attractive way. The whole outside is to be painted white with a green roof. Improvements on Receiving with the guests of honor and Mrs. Crook and Miss Blythe were: Mr. and Mrs. W. D. C Sherrill. the surrounding grounds will be made with the aid of some girl scout troops who use the Hut as their meeting place. It is hoped that a rug similar to those in Burwell Hall can be bought for the large front room. The Hut will be decked with new furniture. The old stove is to be replaced with new heaters and the fireplace will be opened. Attractive color schemes will appear on newly papered walls. In the small room a library will be installed for the use of the students. Current magazines and interesting books will be kept here. The funds for this renovation will be obtained from student donations. Attention! The majority of the photographs, ordered by students from their annual proofs made by Dunbar Studio, will be brought out to the college next Wednesday morning, November 8; and may be claimed in Burwell Hall. Bring the amount of money that you owe, as no photographs may be claimed with- payment. The North Carolina Chapter of American Association of Teachers of French will hold a meeting at Queens- Chicora college Friday, November 10 through Saturday, Nov. 11. The American Association of Teachers of French is a national or ganization. Almost all stales have chapters. The North Carolina chap ter was formed only three years ago. The meeting will o})en Friday eve-> ning with g formal dinner in the college dining room. Members from all parts of the state will attend the dinner. Dr. Hunter Blakely, presi dent of the college, will bring greet ings to the guests from the college. Dr. Russell Pope of Guilford col lege will give the response to the welcome. After the dinner there will be an interesting program in the audito rium. The program will commemo rate the tercentenary year of the birth of Racine, the noted French writer. At that time Claire Wishart will sing several French songs. Prof. Rene Hardre of Woman’s college of U. N. C., will read a paper on the life of Racine. Several scenes from Racine’s play, “Andromaque,” will be given by members of the Char lotte branch of Alliance Francaise. Alembers of the Alliance Francaise are invited to the meeting. A re ception w'ill be given after tbe pro gram by the American Association of Teachers of French and the Al liance Francaise. The reception will be given in Burwell hall. At nine-thirty o’clock Saturday morning a regular business sessiom will be held. Prof. Wm. Edgerton of Guilford college will read a paper, “Life In a French Lycee.” Miss Catherine Tighe of Asheville high school will talk on impressions of France from a Southerner’s travels. Air. Herbert Hucks of Greensboro high school will speak on French in fluences in South Carolina. There will be a round table dis cussion on the correlation of the high school course in French with that of college. Miss Estelle Mitchell of Greensboro will be the leader of the discussion. The meeting will end Saturday at noon. Members of the French de partment at Queens-Chicora will usher and assist at the reception Fri day evening. Q-C Players Plan Program The Queens’ Plaj^ers have made dans for several programs to be pre sented during the year. One of the first programs to be presented will be “Peg O My Heart.” A choric reading program will be )resented in chapel. This will con sist of reading done by a group of girls in two tones of voices—light and lieavy—to the accompaniment of the piano. Aliss Ethel King is director of the dramatic group. and it is hoped that a sufficient amount will be raised. After the hut is remodeled and redecorated, it will serve as a stu dent center for numerous campus activities as well as the center of S.C.A. work.
